On May 6, 2025, International Media Support (IMS), the Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC), and Jamii Forums launched an ambitious new project aimed at strengthening public interest media, content production, and distribution to promote active citizen engagement, good governance, and accountability.
This initiative focuses on enhancing media professionalism by upholding high standards of ethics, accountability, legality, and credibility to ensure balanced and high-quality reporting. It seeks to build the capacities of journalists, bloggers, and media outlets in key areas such as safety, investigative and data-driven public interest journalism, election coverage, gender-transformative reporting, and the use of AI and emerging technologies.
Additionally, the project will raise awareness among media professionals about media laws, the importance of media independence, and fundamental freedoms like freedom of expression (FoE) and the right to information (RTI). It will also strengthen their ability to combat hate speech, intolerance, discrimination, and misinformation or disinformation.
Expected to deliver a broad impact, the project will advance journalistic techniques, foster economic empowerment through innovation, promote social cohesion via ethical media practices, and support policy reforms that create a favorable environment for the media. This comprehensive approach aims to empower stakeholders throughout Tanzania’s media landscape, building resilience, integrity, and a well-informed public discourse.
