The Coalition on Right to Information (CoRI), with coordination and support from JamiiAfrica, in partnership with the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT), commemorated the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) 2026 on 28 September in Dar es Salaam.
Held under the theme “Upholding Information Integrity in the Digital Age: The Role of Access to Information in Addressing Information Disorder,” the dialogue brought together approximately 50 stakeholders from government institutions, civil society organizations, media, academia, digital rights organizations, and development partners.
The discussion examined the critical link between access to timely and reliable public information and the growing challenges of misinformation, disinformation, and information disorder. Participants reflected on progress and remaining gaps in Tanzania’s access-to-information landscape, including citizens’ ability to access, understand, verify, and effectively use public information.
Participants emphasized the importance of proactive disclosure by public institutions and stronger collaboration among government, civil society, media, technology actors, and citizens to improve information integrity and strengthen public trust.
The dialogue also explored the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). Stakeholders highlighted the need to promote responsible use of these technologies while strengthening public understanding and adapting information governance approaches to a rapidly changing digital environment.
The commemoration reaffirmed the importance of collective action to ensure that citizens can access timely, accurate, and reliable information and use it to participate meaningfully in public affairs.
The Coalition on Right to Information (CoRI) is a network of civil society organizations working to advance access to information, transparency, and freedom of expression in Tanzania. Established in 2006, the coalition has advocated for stronger access-to-information legislation and media-friendly legal frameworks.
CoRI brings together 22 members, including civil society organizations, legal associations, and media organizations, working collectively to promote the public’s right to access information and strengthen an enabling environment for informed civic participation.
