JamiiAfrica at Uganda Media Week: Building Resilience and Independent Journalism in the Digital Era

JamiiAfrica partnered with Media Focus on Africa in collaboration with the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) in the Seventh Annual Uganda Media Week; a 2-day event designed to bring together journalists, academics, researchers, and other key stakeholders to discuss the future of the media, constitutional press freedom, and other critical issues affecting the sector.

The annual event that took place at Four Points by Sheraton in Kampala from December 17–18, 2025, plays a vital role in strengthening collaboration, dialogue, and collective problem-solving around the challenges facing Uganda’s media industry. This year’s theme, “Building Resilience and Safeguarding Independent Journalism,” directly addressed the increasing pressures on the profession and emphasized the need for practical and sustainable responses.

The discussions underscored a shared commitment to protecting and promoting the essential role of journalism in a young and evolving democracy like Uganda.

JamiiAfrica was represented by its Head of Programs, Ms. Ziada Seukindo who actively participated in the event and contributed to a panel discussion on “The Future of Local News in the Digital Era.” The discussion focused on how independent journalism can remain resilient, credible, and financially sustainable amid rapid technological change.

Ms. Ziada highlighted that Looking ahead, JamiiAfrica’s 2025–2030 strategic plan prioritizes collaboration with ministries, local authorities, and national institutions, as well as close partnerships with civil society organizations, faith-based organizations, academic institutions, advocacy groups, and the private sector.

Through these collaborations, JamiiAfrica aims to share resources, amplify collective efforts, and facilitate training programs, workshops, and policy roundtables that promote transparency, responsiveness, and shared accountability initiatives.
