As misinformation, hate speech, and online gender-based violence (OGBV) increasingly affect lives both online and offline, collective action is essential to protecting Tanzania’s digital public space and ensuring access to credible information.
On 7 August 2026, JamiiAfrica convened a Media Stakeholders’ Dialogue, bringing together editors, journalists, civil society leaders, and technology stakeholders from across Tanzania to strengthen collaboration on media monitoring and information integrity.
The dialogue moved beyond identifying challenges to focus on practical, collaborative solutions. Participants exchanged strategies for gender-sensitive and ethical journalism, explored effective approaches to monitoring digital content, and discussed ways to strengthen responsible and evidence-based reporting.
The discussions build on JamiiAfrica’s broader commitment to strengthening media capacity and integrity, fact-checking, countering disinformation, and creating safe spaces for meaningful public engagement. Through initiatives such as JamiiCheck and journalist capacity-building programmes, JamiiAfrica continues to support a more informed and resilient information ecosystem.
A key outcome of the dialogue was the groundwork for a joint platform for real-time information sharing, coordinated fact-checking, and rapid corrective reporting. Such collaboration can enable media, civil society, and technology actors to respond more effectively to emerging misinformation and other forms of online harm.
The initiative reflects JamiiAfrica’s approach of Inform, Engage and Empower—creating spaces where citizens, media, civil society, and other stakeholders can work together to strengthen informed public participation and accountable governance.
JamiiAfrica appreciates all participants for their valuable insights, expertise, and commitment. Protecting Tanzania’s digital public space cannot be achieved by one organization alone. It requires sustained collaboration across the media, civil society, technology, and other sectors to build an information ecosystem grounded in accuracy, integrity, inclusion, and public trust.
