On September 25, 2025, during the Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFAfrica25) in Windhoek, Namibia, JamiiAfrica hosted a compelling panel titled “Reclaiming Trust and Truth: Community-Led Approaches to Combat Disinformation in Africa.” The discussion brought together influential voices from across the continent to confront the rising threat of disinformation and highlight citizen-driven solutions.
Panelists explored the roots of disinformation, analyzing the socio-political and technological factors that fuel its spread. They discussed how false narratives weaken social cohesion, undermine democratic institutions, and distort public discourse. Contributions from Uganda and Ghana provided first-hand perspectives, grounding the conversation in real-life experiences and regional contexts.
JamiiAfrica used the platform to introduce JamiiCheck, its citizen-powered fact-checking tool. The platform enables citizens to verify claims, flag misleading content, and actively support a healthier information ecosystem. By equipping communities with fact-checking tools, JamiiCheck fosters public trust and safeguards digital spaces against manipulation.
The session also marked the beginning of JamiiAfrica’s regional expansion plans. Building on insights gained in Tanzania, the organization is preparing to scale its model across the continent. The mission remains clear: to protect information integrity by placing communities—not external actors—at the heart of the fight against disinformation.
