Following a directive from Hon. Minister Kassim Majaliwa during the 2025 World Press Freedom Day commemorations in Arusha, JamiiAfrica has been tasked with convening stakeholders to review and strengthen the Draft National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. The aim is to ensure the strategy is inclusive, locally relevant, and responsive to sector-specific needs ahead of its official launch later this year.
In May 2025, JamiiAfrica brought together stakeholders from education, telecommunications, civic media and technology, civil society, the legal sector, fintech, banking, research and development, and other key areas. Their contributions were instrumental in shaping a comprehensive and inclusive strategy.
During the discussions, stakeholders stressed the importance of incorporating monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to measure adoption, risks, and societal impacts. They called for strong cross-border data governance frameworks, clear legal boundaries, liability mechanisms, and safeguards for human rights. They also emphasized the need for well-defined action plans with budgeted programs, alignment with international standards, investment in infrastructure, capacity building and talent development, and policies that support innovation while protecting rights. Practical applications of AI in agriculture, health, tourism, justice, and education were identified as crucial priorities.
Stakeholders further underscored the role of AI in shaping the future of media, creative, and entertainment industries. They highlighted opportunities in content personalization and curation beyond traditional news, workflow optimization in content production, innovative approaches to monetization and advertising, combating disinformation and misinformation, and strengthening AI literacy and talent development across the sector.
This engagement reflects JamiiAfrica’s commitment to advancing digital rights, protecting individual freedoms, promoting equitable access, and fostering a human-centered digital ecosystem. By working collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, JamiiAfrica believes the National AI Strategy can deliver long-term benefits for Tanzania’s digital future.
