From April 27–29, 2025, media stakeholders in Tanzania met in Arusha to mark the 32nd anniversary of World Press Freedom Day (WPFD), ahead of the global May 3 date. The event reaffirmed Tanzania’s leadership in promoting press freedom and media development in the region.
Vibrant and inclusive, the 2025 WPFD brought together diverse participants for discussions on media reform, journalist protection, and inclusivity—building on past achievements that have strengthened regulatory frameworks, advanced gender equity, and improved journalist safety.
The program began with a unity fun run, followed by opening remarks from the Organizing Committee Chairperson, JamiiAfrica, and messages of solidarity from the diplomatic corps. Delegates examined how the media can adapt to the rise of artificial intelligence under the global theme, “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.” Discussions addressed AI’s transformation of journalism, ethical concerns, misinformation, and regulatory readiness.
The event concluded with the endorsement of stakeholder resolutions outlining action points for government, media, civil society, and development partners. The government requested a copy for review and possible action.
