Across Borders: Strengthening Civic Participation in Uganda Through Digital Innovation

From December 1 to 7, 2024, Jamii Forums, in partnership with International Media Support (IMS) and Media Focus on Africa, conducted a series of strategic activities in Kampala, Uganda. The goal was to expand the reach of its digital tools—JamiiCheck, a citizen-centred fact-checking platform, and Fichua Uovu, a secure whistleblowing portal.

Having already proven effective in Tanzania by strengthening information integrity and empowering citizens, these tools were introduced to Ugandan stakeholders to boost civic participation, improve accountability, and combat misinformation and corruption.

This initiative reflects Jamii Forums’ commitment to building meaningful partnerships and collaborations that empower local communities through technology, advancing its mission to create an informed and engaged citizenry across the region.

Moving forward, Jamii Forums will tailor the platforms to Uganda’s multilingual context, deliver fact-checking training to journalists and community leaders, formalize strategic partnerships, and launch outreach campaigns to encourage platform adoption. This groundwork is set to make a significant contribution to Uganda’s efforts to fight misinformation and corruption.
