2011 Tanzania Media Fund fellowship winners named

Two journalists of the Mwananchi Communications Limited, have been selected for the 2011 Tanzania Media Fund Fellowship.The Citizen acting Business Editor, Mr Damas Kanyabwoya, and Mwanaspoti’s sub-editor, Mr Daniel Mbega, were yesterday named among six journalists selected countrywide to participate in the only fellowship programme in the country.

Other successful candidates included Albino Midelo, a freelance journalist, Latifa Ganzel of Uhuru and Mzalendo, Editha Karlo, a freelancer with Mtanzania and Mariam Talib Omar, a freelancer with Zanzibar Leo.Mr Kanyabwoya joined The Citizen in 2006 as a business reporter after working with the Business Times in the same capacity for several years.

Mr Mbega joined Mwanaspoti in March this year as a sub-editor. He has prior to that worked with Media Solutions Limited as chief reporter before moving to Dira Media as acting managing editor.

Announcing the 2011 fellows at a press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday TMF executive manager Ernest Sungura said the fellowship would run for a period of six months from June to December this year.

The fellows will be given an incomparable opportunity to travel to different parts of the country to write on issues focusing on agriculture and environment for media coverage. Speaking to The Citizen, the fellows expressed hope that experience gained through the fellowship will enrich their journalistic skills and help the community at large.

“This is an important opportunity that TMF has offered us, I hope the experience will improve my profession, benefit my media house and the community in general” said Mr Kanyabwoya.

Ms Latifa, for her part, thanked the Fund for establishing the programme that enables journalists to explore into the rural areas.But Mr Mbega urged the government to work on various issues raised by journalists who get rare opportunities like the one offered by TMF to go deep into the villages.
