A word of Welcome

Jenerali Ulimwengu

I take great pleasure in inviting you to this blog, which is dedicated to a Tanzania Media Fund Fellowship for the year 2010, involving four young journalists working on projects of their own choice. Finnigan (in Lindi), Salome (in Morogoro), Erick (in Kigoma) and Orton (in Shinyanga) will utilize this space to share with you their experiences as they carry out their investigations, affording you a peep into aspects of rural Tanzania.

Though each one of them has chosen a particular topic for which a grant has been made by TMF, they will not be constrained to write exclusively on those topics; rather, it is hoped that they will allow themselves the leisure of looking at rural lives and livelihoods in general, observing and recording what they come across in their work.

It is my hope that they will educate us while at the same time entertaining us, and that through their eyes and pens we will be able to live a little of the rural story that is all too often ignored by town dwellers. If you find any of the stories interesting please share it with your colleagues via Twitter, Facebook or G-Buzz. You can also comment on any story at the bottom provided space.

It would be remiss of me not to thank Jamii Forums for their acceptance to host this blog and as well as for all the technical backstopping they have provided for the Fellow and their mentors, Fausta Musokwa and myself.

Welcome, and enjoy!

  • I believe they will uncover the hidden truth of what is going on in our country. I wish every region would have a representative.

  • Mzee Ulimwengu (usage of the title is ‘respect’ than reference to ‘age’):

Thank you, congratulations, and sincere here for these lucky people to succeed in Educating, Entertaining and Informing us. Well done. UIGWE na wengine.

  • It is said old is gold, we are looking forward to herar further from young generation on how are you going to critically come up with views and challanges towards 2010 election, not forgetting the focus and vision to educacate the village community which is not very well informed on how this country is being consumed by mafisadi papa without mercy. The Agenda is ‘Hakuna Kulala mpaka kieleweke’. do not accept a pair of Khanga/Cap/t-shirts at the cost of selling your humanity and dignity

  • i’m insipired by their work,i believe that until the rural community stories are told, until they are educated, comunicated and participated, we will not be able to see the light of change! thanks kaka jenerali.

  • Thanx a lot Mr Genarali. I am so anxious waiting for their stories and I believe none of their stories will not be published because touches the INTERESTS of so called LEADERS.It will be going against the main objectives of TMF.

  • Congratulation General, Thank you. I am a towndweller, but i like rurals, it’s nice and quite and the people are much nicer there. We are all from rurals. It is the rural that will get us out of hunger and poverty.
    Thank you

  • Hi General, one of your writer’s piece is quite moving. Erick Kabendera’s story on Ujiji. The story has touch my heart. I want to raise funds for a finance a Development project to upgrade how we ride the lakes for people who risk their lives just to make a living or visit their love ones, or just a lonesome tourist. This will also promote tourism. We depend on technology to accomplish this project. We are Wabunifu USA a non Profit Organization. We need your help and everyone on this bloger. All the profits will be going back to the villagers. I have a Strategic plan, Marketing plan, and Operation plan. to get this project get going. my email is [email protected]

  • In depth analysis of how the country is governed is key in tying the loose strings of rural underdevelopment. Individual effort will definitely ease the burden in a short while but fundamental reforms on how our governance structures are being formed and run are by afar the enduring means to get us back on the right track. The first vital step is to kick CCM out of power and let a new culture of accountability of blaming the political party in power, when things go wrong, begin to cement itself. MAY THE ALMIGHTY GOD BLESS THIS GREAT NATION WITH VAST POTENTIALITIES

  • Mzee Rutashubanyuma, Amina.

I think you probably correct on your perspective. But, how you gonna change the culture of secrecy. I am more keen to see the govenment any government ether ccm, chadema cuf ect. how do address the cultures of secrecy on not only government records but also, business record for god sake. i have done a feasibility study which i collected business management information for Development purposes, and I found out you guys are sitting on a wealth of nations. I was only being to succeed because i was a local kid. Thanks everyone for their support. My question to all the leaders, How are your plans to support a business community and wajasirimali. I do not know who is going to be the leader of the nation, but anyone is welcome to help me on that. Where are accounting records.

  • Your lucky Mziba that you succeeded to get the information you needed for your project because, you say, you are a local kid!(sic). Information is a birth right, and according to Article 18(4) of the URT Constitution, every citizen must be given all information that is of concerns to her/him.That is why we must fight to ensure that a law guaranteeing the right to get information from all public and private offices is enacted soonest. The next president can do the country a great service if he pushes his governors to see sense in openness and accountability and pass, now shelved if not abandoned, the Right to Information Bill. Secrecy is the culture of vultures and mafisadi. God bless freedom of information agitators.

  • Mr. Moshiro, thank you for opening my eyes. We can grow faster if we get these treasures. Free enterprise system requires forecast in all most sort of things. But how come people are able to get polls? when we do business analysis we use personal and business information, that seems the same taking polls. you just interviews sole proprietor, individuals and investors and micro enterprises about customer services that all. But we have to press the passage of this bill. anyone who takes over, should find this bill Ikulu. Thanks Gervas for your kindness.

  • don’t forget to follow-up the rural villages of tabora where the natural forrest is now a history, due to exteme logging without benefiting the indiginous, bravo Generali i do admire your inspirational hard work since then………..big up, and God bless yopu and the whiole team

  • Getting the story from the grassroots is one thing and making historical sense out of it is another. It ends up confirming each of us in our Joseph Stiglitz, Nyerere and Chadema convictions. Watch out!

  • We the swahili oriented people miss so sweet of the stories.Do you think of having some of the swahili articles? But thanks very much for the article na hasa ya Amina na Mkuu wake wa shule!

  • To my mind this is what i think;
1.The President of the united republic of Tanzania with his employees are responsible for a such terrible situation of Tanzanians in general for not giving out her citizens a planned and implementable vision to where the country is and where should be heading! Na hii ni kutokana na ukosefu wa sifa hizi miongoni mwao- “‘Uadilifu’, ‘Uzalendo’, ‘Ubunifu’, Uchumi bora’ na ‘Ushirikishaji’”
    2. Tanzanians we should have a heart feeling of hardworking using our talents, opportunities and capabilities to work for ourselves and for our communities. this is because, if each of will keep on blaming the gvt only, it wont help!

  • Congratulation, Jeneraly you do coach and mentor at a time. This help most of the youth to have mission and vision, your always a perfect leader, tight your nut we still have long journey.

  • We are only as educated as our media … so congratulations for this blog, and let’s hope it is blessed with evolutionary thinking….
