What is this with Tanzania power projects where the government is always looking for the 100mw or below to supply power?
When you look at the power crisis facing Tanzania and examine all projects to support Mtera, Kidatu, Kihansi, Nyumba ya Mungu and so is Ubungo, everything is petty project of 100mw or less.
When are we going to invest in large scale power production bearing the fact that our population has doubled wince Kidatu and Mtera were in blue prints and being constructed?
Why is Tanzania looking more into short term electrical power fixes of 100mw such as IPTL Songas, Agrekko, Or currently with Symbion and Jacobsen?
It has been claimed that our needs are 800 mw, but currently we are producing 500mw of which 10% of it is directed to Buzwagi to support Barrick (allegedly), then why not doubling the production to supply us with 1600mw which can help electrify Tanzania which has an estimante of less than 14% of its population using electricity?
If I were in power, I would have developed a 10 year electrification development project that could have created 6 additional thermal power plants that each have capability of generating 450 mw and place them in Mbeya, Pemba, Mtwara, Tabora, Unguja and Manyara to join the national grid and support the existing plants such as Mtera, Kidatu, Ubungo, Nyumba ya Mungu and Pangani.
Also, I could made a massive investment on wind energy with plan to realize a minimum of 600mw of wind turbines built accross Singida and Dodoma plains!
I would have entered a bilateral trade agreement with the donor countries such as Germany, Japan, South Korea and Brazil and split these projects to them while securing a 25-40 year loan guarantee to fund the projects.
Imagine once everything has taken off and power supply is un-interupted, we will increase our industrial expansion to modernize production, increase jobs and mostly increase our revenues.
However we are stuck in the 100mw projects and each year for the last 25 years, we have been looking for these short term projects that cost more in terms of capacity charges and fees and if you sit down and examine the true cost of these contracts we have entered to provide supplement power to Tanesco, you will find out we could have built a successful network of power plant under Tanesco and we could have had Tanzanians, invest through sell of shares to public as way to create additional capital.
But who am I to offer a practical solution, people are used to giza! We have mishumaa, vibatari, karabai and Mbalamwezi!
Short term projects ni njia ya ULAJI!
They are actually not trying to solve the power problem..nah Mchungaji. By acquaring the small scale power projects they are insured of ULAJI yearly thus pretending to be solving the problem keeping people’s hopes high. Playing smart is what our country men do BEST!
Chadema needs to take over starting by planning how to acquire donor funded soft loan/grants to implement the said projects
As i am writing one of Mp from Kigoma and the chairman of Parastalal commission he is in Washington mchungaji i think this man can influence some of the riches countries to implement the outline proposal of installing 450 megawat power plants to six regions
Also this man can help the country to speed up Mchuchuma charcoal whereby the investors proposed to generate 600 megawarts
But as you have said some politician uses their posts for their own benefits. If you can remember the chairman of this committee had suggested to the government to speed up paying Tannesco and threaten to take action of removing standby Generator from Managing Director of Tannesco
All of these are short term strategy i was expecting to here some long strategy from the chairman and make sure that in two years to come there will be no more power rationing
